SIOP Ependymoma II
An international clinical study programme aimed at optimising the diagnosis and treatment of children, adolescents, and young adults with ependymoma.
Ependymoma is one of the most common malignant brain tumours in children and adolescents. In most cases, patients first undergo surgery to remove the tumour. Afterwards, they receive radiotherapy and chemotherapy (drug therapy). Unfortunately, not all patients can be cured in this way, and the treatment can cause severe side effects. The aim of this study is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of ependymoma. The goal is to identify a more targeted treatment for all patients that enhances both survival prospects and quality of life. The study will examine whether treatment can be reduced for patients with good chances of recovery without compromising outcomes. This would expose patients to fewer side effects and make treatment easier to tolerate. For patients with poorer prospects of recovery, promising new therapies are being compared with the current standard treatment.
